Common faults we fix

Commercial or catering freezer playing up? These are the faults we fix.

Most commercial freezer breakdowns come down to a handful of causes. Tell us the symptoms and we’ll help narrow it down before the engineer arrives.

Not freezing or temperature rising

Freezer running warm or drifting above set point. We trace whether it’s refrigerant, airflow, controls or the compressor.

Iced-up evaporator

Iced coils from failed defrost heaters, timers or settings, blocked airflow or warm air getting in.

Frost on the walls

Frost building up inside the cabinet, usually from worn door seals, doors left open or a defrost fault.

Compressor not starting or running constantly

Compressors that won’t start, keep tripping or never switch off. Electrical and mechanical faults diagnosed on site.

Noisy fans

Evaporator and condenser fan motors that are noisy, seized or have stopped.

Door seals and hinges

Split or worn gaskets and damaged or dropped hinges that stop the door closing properly.

Controller and alarm faults

Faulty controllers, probes and displays, and alarms that keep sounding or won’t clear.

Refrigerant leaks

Leak detection and repair by F-Gas certified engineers, then the system recharged correctly.

Water leaking or a blocked drain

Blocked or frozen drain lines and failed drain heaters leaving water or ice on the floor.

What to do while you wait

Protect your stock while the engineer is on the way.

A few simple steps help hold the temperature and keep your food safety records straight.

  • Keep the doors shut as much as possible so the freezer holds its temperature.
  • Move stock to another unit, such as another freezer or cold store, if you have space.
  • Log the temperature and the time at regular intervals for your food safety records.
  • Leave any ice on the coils. Chipping it off can puncture the evaporator.

If you’re not sure whether stock is still safe to use, follow your food safety procedures.

FAQ

Commercial freezer repair questions.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most from kitchens, food retailers and other commercial sites.

Why is my commercial freezer not freezing?

Common causes are an iced-up evaporator, a failed evaporator or condenser fan, a dirty condenser, low refrigerant from a leak, a faulty controller or probe, or worn door seals letting warm air in. Check the door closes and seals properly and that nothing is blocking the vents or the condenser. If the temperature is still rising, call us and an engineer will diagnose the fault.

Why is ice building up in my freezer?

Ice usually builds up when the defrost isn’t working (a failed heater, timer or controller setting), when moist air gets in through damaged seals or a door left open, or when the drain line freezes. Ice on the evaporator blocks airflow, so the temperature creeps up. Don’t chip it off the coils, as that can puncture them. Call us to find and fix the cause.

Should I repair or replace my commercial freezer?

It depends on the fault, the age and condition of the unit, and the cost of parts. Many faults, such as fans, door seals, controllers and defrost problems, are straightforward to repair. Our engineer will diagnose the fault and tell you what the repair involves and what it costs, so you can decide before any work goes ahead.

Do you work 24/7?

Yes. We’re available 24/7 and offer same-day call-outs across London. If your freezer is down, call 020 8050 4009, or WhatsApp photos and fault codes so the engineer arrives prepared.

Which types of commercial freezer do you repair?

We repair upright, chest, under-counter and display freezers, as well as ice cream freezers and blast freezers, for commercial kitchens, shops and other food businesses. For walk-in freezers, see our cold room and walk-in freezer repair page.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Planned maintenance helps catch worn seals, iced coils, dirty condensers and failing parts before they cause a breakdown. See our services page for details.
