Common faults we fix

Cold room or freezer playing up? These are the faults we fix.

Most cold room and walk-in freezer breakdowns come down to a handful of causes. Tell us the symptoms and we’ll help narrow it down before the engineer arrives.

Temperature not holding

Room running warm or drifting above set point. We trace whether it’s refrigerant, airflow, controls or the condensing unit.

Ice build-up on the evaporator

Iced coils from failed defrost heaters, timers or settings, blocked airflow or warm air getting in.

Compressor or condensing unit failure

Units that won’t start, keep tripping, run noisy or overheat. Electrical and mechanical faults diagnosed on site.

Door seals and heater strips

Worn or split gaskets, dropped doors and failed frame heaters that let warm air in and ice form.

Fans

Evaporator and condenser fan motors that have stopped, seized or become noisy.

Controllers and alarms

Faulty controllers, probes and displays, and alarms that keep sounding or won’t clear.

Refrigerant leaks

Leak detection and repair by F-Gas certified engineers, then the system recharged correctly.

Drain line freezing

Frozen or blocked drain lines and failed drain heaters leaving water or ice on the floor.

Short-cycling

Systems switching on and off too often, which wears the compressor and lets temperatures swing.

How a call-out works

What to have ready

Have these to hand when you call.

  • Site address and any access details.
  • Unit make and model, usually on the rating plate of the condensing unit or evaporator.
  • What it’s doing: alarms, fault codes, ice, water, noises, or not running at all.
  • Current temperature shown on the controller display.

Photos of the controller display and rating plate help the engineer prepare. Send them on WhatsApp.

FAQ

Cold room repair questions.

Straight answers to the questions we hear most from kitchens, food retailers and other commercial sites.

Are you available 24/7 for cold room breakdowns?

Yes. We’re available 24/7 and offer same-day call-outs across London. If your cold room or walk-in freezer is down, call 020 8050 4009, or WhatsApp photos and fault codes so the engineer arrives prepared.

Why is my cold room not getting cold?

The usual causes are an iced-up evaporator, a failed fan, low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty or failing condensing unit, a faulty controller or probe, or warm air getting in through worn door seals. Check the door closes and seals properly and that nothing is blocking the evaporator or condenser. If the temperature is still rising, call us and an engineer will diagnose the fault.

Why is ice building up in my walk-in freezer?

Ice usually builds up when the defrost isn’t working (a failed heater, timer or controller setting), when moist air gets in through damaged seals or a door left ajar, or when the drain line freezes. Ice on the evaporator blocks airflow, so the temperature creeps up. Don’t chip it off the coils, as that can puncture them. Call us to find and fix the cause.

Can you repair any make of cold room?

Our engineers work on most makes and types of commercial cold rooms, walk-in freezers and condensing units. Tell us the make and model when you call, or send a photo of the rating plate, so the engineer comes prepared.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Planned maintenance is available and helps catch worn seals, iced coils, dirty condensers and failing parts before they cause a breakdown. See our services page for details.

What should I do while I wait for the engineer?

Keep the door shut as much as possible, note the current temperature, and move high-risk stock to another cold store if you can. If the evaporator is iced, don’t try to chip the ice off.
